Remote Counselling Protocols

As a counsellor delivering remote services it is vital that you:

  • Ask your client to arrange to be in a private, quiet space with no distractions for the duration of your 50-minute sessions. It is recommended that you make this clear prior to your very first session. One way to think about it is to treat remote sessions as you would in-person sessions.

  • This means no driving, multitasking and no one else is present (unless it is couples counselling) This is not only for everyone’s safety and protection but also enables the client and counsellor to focus, speak freely and be fully present. These elements help make sessions as valuable as possible.

  • If your remote client shows up for a session and they are not alone or are doing something that gets in the way of them being fully present, please ask them to reschedule the session. Do not move forward with it.
